The Illinois Power League (IPL) regular season wrapped up at home for the Bulldogs with a pair of nail biting wins against the Hodgkins Blazers. The Blazers came ready to play for the twilight double header with strong defense and a productive offense, but the Bulldogs prevailed in a pair of 1 run wins 11-10 and 5-4.
There were a ton of highlights from two very solid game from the Bulldogs. The combination of "Thunder" and "Lightning" at the top of the order was restored with very effective results as Gwen "Lightning" Shouse had an on base percentage of .800 over the two games in the lead off spot and Chloe "Thunder" Tratar had an .833 on base percentage. Thunder and Lightning combined to score 8 of the 15 total runs the Bulldogs scored on the night.
There was plenty of power on display as well. Elly "Squirrel" Reynolds blasted a grand slam over the left fielders head as she went 2 for 4 on the night with 4 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Isabella "Izzy Pop" Jonas had a clutch single in game 2 that broke a 2-2 deadlock, with 2 RBI's. Jonas' liner sparked a 4 run rally to put the Bulldogs ahead for good. "Izzy Pop" Jonas went 2 for 2 at the plate in game 2 to lead the Bulldogs in hits. "Syd "Vicious" Schmitz added what would become the game winning run on a sacrifice ground ball to score Shouse. Bella "Zuchinni" Zagotta, made a high pressure play with two outs and a runner on third, when she fieled a ground ball and fired a strike to first base to preserve the 5-4 for the Bulldogs.
Schmitz also played a key role in the first game win, when she connected with "Duck" Schroeder to catch a Blazer stealing home for the third out of the top of the 5th, to keep the Bulldogs within 1 run of the Blazers going into the bottom of the 5th. The Bulldogs ultimately loaded up the bases in the last half of the last inning and manufactured two runs to complete the come from behind win in game 1.
With the double header sweep, the Bulldogs ended the IPL regular season with a 7-2-1 record which was good enough for the 4th seed and a bye in the IPL playoffs. With a single win, the Bulldogs could find themselves playing at The Ballpark at Rosemont, home of the Chicago Bandits, in the IPL semi-final game against either Bartlett or Glen Ellyn. In order to play in Rosemont, the Bulldogs will have to get by a Lemont Lightning team that ran all over them and won by run rule back in May.
