July 1, 2018

The Bulldogs showed their true colors in a very hot and dusty Wheaton Red, White and Blue Tournament.  Their true colors are softball diamond dusty tan and winning.

Throughout the tournament the Bulldogs fought hard at every turn.  Getting off to a bit of a slow start with a 5-5 tie against the Roselle Rockers, the Bulldogs staged a determined come back after they came out a little flat and got into a 4-0 hole after 2 innings.  The Bulldogs climbed out of that hole with a 5 run fourth inning sparked by back to back doubles by Molly "Beebs" Giesen and Katie "Duck" Schroeder.

Schroeder had 2 RBI's and scored in the inning, while Renee "Renado" Randles came through with a clutch single for an RBI scoring Elly "Squirrel" Reynolds.  Randles also scored when Syd "Vicious" Schmitz reached on an error.  Unfortunately the Bulldogs couldn't hold on to their slim 1 run lead and gave up the tying run in the top of the 5th.  The game was ended by time restrictions after the Bulldogs bottom of the 5th.

Early Saturday morning worked out much better for the Bulldogs as they continued their winning ways against the Winfield Wolverines beating them 11-2.   Later in the day, they ran into a buzzsaw in the form of the Oak Lawn Gems who put 14 hits on the Bulldogs, including 4 doubles and 1 triple in run rule loss.

In bracket play on Sunday morning the Bulldogs faced off against a tough Burr Ridge Blast team, with the Bulldogs pulling out a tight 3.2 victory for the team's first Bracket win in a tournament.  Avery "Showtime" Lundblad, was outstanding yet again in her start in the circle, going 4 innings giving up only 1 earned run on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts.  The Bulldogs played strong defense with a team fielding percentage of .920 with Katie "Duck" Schroeder gunning down 1 runner at second base on a steal.  Chloe "Thunder" Tratar came on in relief in the 5th and 6th inning giving up 1 unearned run on an error.  Tratar then faced down the heart the 2,3 & 4 hitters for Burr Ridge in the 6th by striking out the side.  In two innings of work, Tratar gave up 2 walks, no hits and struck out 4 to earn the close save.  She also got the game winning RBI, using her speed to beat out a drop third strike that scored Haydin "Icepack" Hampton.

The Bulldogs lost their next game to Carol Stream, who went on to win the tournament.  The Bulldogs ended up in a tie for 5th in the 12U division in a very strong showing.
