Schroeder Crushes a Grand Slam Gapper in Heartbreaking Loss to Winfield

June 8, 2018

The Bulldogs couldn't quite seal the deal against the Winfield Wolverines, losing a heartbreaker by 1 run on a walk off single in the bottom of the 7th.  Our bulldogs fought hard all night playing from behind most of the game until a 6th inning grand slam by Katie "Duck" Schroeder put the Bulldogs ahead 8-7.

Schroeder led the Bulldogs once again on offense going 3 for 4 at the plate and falling 1 triple short of hitting for the cycle.  Duck had a single, double and a grand slam home run in the game, along with 5 RBI's, while scoring 2 runs herself.

With the Bulldogs trailing by three runs with only 4 outs left, the team was a bit frustrated and quiet with the bases loaded and 2 outs.  On a 1-1 count Schroeder hit a tape measure shot into the left center gap with the ball flying an estimated 180-190 feet in the air.  The Bulldog faithful erupted in cheers as Katie cleared the bases and as mobbed by her teammates at home plate.  After the game, in a very classy move, the Winfield Wolverines presented Katie with the game ball.

Despite the loss, there were several other highlights for the Bulldogs throughout the night.  In the bottom of the frame, Winfield scored 2 and went up by 1 run again forcing the Bulldogs to mount another comeback, which they did in the top of the 7th scoring three runs to go up 11 to 9.  The team found a way to manufacturing runs with hustle and discipline at the plate, mounting the rally on walks by Syd "VIcious" Schmits and Isabella "Izzy Pop" Jonas, and a sacrifice grounder by Haydin "Icepack" Hampton.  scoring Schmitz.  The Bulldogs finished the rest of the rally with two outs when Chloe "Thunder" Tratar layed down a perfect bunt single to score Jonas to take the lead.  Katie Schroeder doubled after an Avery "Showtime" Lundblad walk to give the Dogs their third run.  Schmitz, Giesen and Zagotta also contributed RBI's to the cause and Shmitz and Tratar combined for 5 stolen bases to lead the team in running.

"Thunder" Tratar started the game in the circle for the Bulldogs and pitched 3 innings giving up 5 runs total, with only 3 earned with 5 walks and 4 strike outs.  "Vicious" Schmitz came on in relief pitching 3 and 2/3 innings with giving up 7 runs with only 1 earned.  On defense, the story was errors with the Bulldogs committing 9 resulting in 8 unearned runs.  Despite the errors, there were a few defensive stars of the game with "Duck" Schroeder collecting 7 put outs and three assists and a double play, Avery "Showtime" Lundblad with 6 put outs and Haydin "Icepack" Hampton with 3 put outs and 1 double play.  All three committed no errors.
