The 12U Bulldogs bounced back from their home loss against Wheaton to play one of their best games of the year against a very good Glen Ellyn Phillies club. The Phillies thrashed the Bulldogs last fall 18-1, but it was a different story this spring as the girls pulled out a great team win coming from behind in the 6th inning to win 7-6.
The Bulldogs fell behind early after the Phillies had a 4 run second inning on three Bulldog errors and two wild pitches. Then Renee "Renado" Randles sparked the offense hustling out an error, grabbing the RBI for the Bulldogs second run. The Phillies extended their lead to 6-3 in the third, then Chloe "Thunder" Tratar took control of the game in the circle with a dominant pitching performance holding the Phillies scoreless in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings with 4 strike outs, while retiring 11 batters in 3 pitches or less.
Avery "Showtime" Lundblad, came in as the closer in the 7th getting into a small jam with two runners on base, but held strong keeping the Phillies off the scoreboard. The Bulldog defense came through with Syd "Vicious" Schmitz getting a great jump on a shallow fly ball for the last out of the game.
Despite 6 errors in the game, the Bulldog bats came through 10 hits. The brilliant Tony Schmitz "double bump" line up, paid off with Gwen "Lightning" Shouse and Avery Lundblad combining for an effective .650 OBP and Schmitz and Tratar also effective with a combined .500 OBP in the 6&7 spots putting big hitters Reynolds, Schroeder, Hampton and Giesen in a position to do what they do best. Tratar and Jonas kept up their blistering streaks at the plate both going .500 for the night. Reynolds, Hampton, Schmitz, Randles, Giesen and Jonas all had RBI's.
Sixth inning heroics from Schmitz and Hampton completed the comback when Haydin "Icepack" Hampton hit a rocket ground ball just past the shortstop for a single that scored Elly "Squirrel" Reynolds representing the tying run. Hampton advanced to third and scored the winning run on a ground out by Syd "Vicious" for a sacrifice RBI.
Chloe "Thunder" Tratar took home game MVP honors for her pitching performance earning the coveted IPL bag tag from the Glen Ellyn Phillies. With the win, the Bulldogs are now 4-1 in Illinois Power League play.
